Expert Staff to Minister for Leading Sector & Infrastructure Development, BAPPENAS, Indonesia
Pungky Sumadi received his udergraduate degree in economics from the Univeristy of Indonesia in 1986. He worked for the BEII-Sumitomo General Leasing Company between 1987-1988, and in late 1988 he joined the Indonesian National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) in 1988 as a junior staff at the Bureau of Socio-economic and Spatial Planning. He received scholarships from BAPPENAS for MCP degree (MIT) in 1993 and Ph.D degree (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) in 2004.
In 1994 he was assigned to the OPEC Fund for International Development in Vienna, Austria and worked as a loan administration officer (1994-1996.) In December 1996, he returned to Indonesia and worked for the Bureau of Urban Development, Settlements and Public Housing, BAPPENAS.
The 1997 crisis brought him to lead a team to design the Urban Poverty Project—an anti-poverty project to empower the urban poor. Since then, he had been assigned as the Director of Poverty Reduction, Director of Social Protection and Welfare, and the Director of Financial Service and SOE. His last assignments were to improve Indonesia’s financial sector; i.e., promoting the country’s financial inclusion, improving financial deepening, and coordinating the work on Indonesia’s Masterplan for sharia financial architecture. He currently serves as the Expert Staff to the Minister for Leading Sector and Infrastructure Development. Leading sector covers food security, energy security, maritime, tourism and industry.
